Decades of sustained investment in research, talent and industry partnerships underpin Singapore’s semiconductor capabilities. Singapore backs technologies with early conviction, giving researchers and industry the confidence to pursue technologies with long development cycles.
For nearly two decades, Singapore has maintained national R&D investment at around 1% of GDP. This commitment continues through Singapore’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) plan, the country’s national research and innovation plan to strengthen national R&D and move research closer to industry impact. In RIE2030 (from 2026 to 2030), Singapore has committed sustained investment in semiconductor R&D, focusing on high-growth areas such as advanced packaging, silicon photonics, piezoMEMS, flat optics, radiofrequency gallium nitride (RF GaN), power electronics, and integrated circuit design.
Singapore is also investing in a 12-inch R&D fab at JTC nanoSpace @ Tampines. By giving companies shared access to industry-grade tools, cleanroom facilities and fabrication operations, the facility lowers the cost, risk and time needed to move from lab-scale research to manufacturable technologies.
